Since you mentioned the need for a few "Smaller games" to hold you over, I have a few ideas that may be simple to produce.

Management:

Airport Sim - You manage an airport from a manager's perspective. For the most part the game would be text based (nothing like the failed Airport tycoon series) You receive contracts from airlines looking for a slot pair(takeoff and landing) but you as the manager must decide when the plane shall land, takeoff, and at what gate. These contracts may have limitations such as time of day and # of flights per week/day to a specific destination. You would also be approached by businesses who would like to setup shop. What keeps things interesting is the complex yet simple balance. if you expand the airport too quickly, you start paying too much in maintaining the airport. if you expand too slowly, you have trouble fitting airlines into time slots and passenger appeal goes down due to a crowded airport.

Airport mania styled sim- taking a similar gameplay route, but maybe adding in taxiways and specific gate assignments.

Public Transportation - You have a layout of a major city. your job is to provide transportation around the city, depending on where people want to go. You build the bus stops and decide the routes and how many busses per route.(would assist in creation of some coding that could be used in a shipping management game and passenger dynamics that could be used in the Airline sim)

Forum - Signature character count

This is a suggestion ive mentioned in various chats before, but i thought id write it down in here too as its become especially relevant to me.

There is a 255 character limit on signatures for people, which makes a lot of sense to keep the forum tidy and clean.
One problem with it is that the forum seems to count some links/bbcode in that character count as well.

This isnt too serious a problem until you consider that people who want to link threads they made in the forum (like me) really wont have room for anything else.

Simple example, my current sig looks like this

(Unofficial)Gearcity FAQ

(Unofficial)Suggestion Links thread

Gearcity Forums IRC

These are three links, two are threads i maintain and the third is a link to encourage people to discuss the game on IRC.
This is 82 characters, but when i put links/bbcode on it, its all i can fit in my sig.
I even shortened one of the threads names in order to fit it.

Personally, i dont see the benefit in including links in the char count. If the intent is to keep it clean/small then links wont make it any longer. If the intent is to discourage/stop linking or changing text size, then it could be outright disabled in the sigs.

So my suggestion would be for the sig character count to not include links.

Here is what my sig looks like in code, just for reference

Code:

[url=http://www.ventdev.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=1059](Unofficial)Gearcity FAQ[/url]

Ive got a suggestion on the general layout of the forum, its minor but may be useful at some point.
It needs some explanation first.

Currently, the only place ive seen the Forum Rules show is the "Gearcity" forum as you can here:
http://www.ventdev.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?fid=1

It doesn't show on other major forum categories, such as
The Forum Index
General
Aero Mogul
News

It also doesnt show in any of the sub categories or sub forums of those, such as
Open Beta
General discussion
etc.

My suggestion is at least having it in the top Main forum index here:
http://www.ventdev.com/forums/index.php
I just checked one of my favorite forums(Paradox Interactive), and they don't even have it shown anywhere beyond a forum faq and your user agreement when you register, so i suppose its all up to personal preference.

Edit: I was just messing with the formatting of the rules, to see if it could be neater and smaller. Its neater to look at but not very neatly coded, but ill share it anyway incase you want want it.

Forum Rules

Treat other members with the respect they deserve. This should go without saying, but treat others like you would like to be treated !

Please do not spam. The definition of spam is an irrelevant or advertising post. Any post considered spam will be removed.

Please do not post threads text in all CAPITALS since this is considered to be shouting and is not necessary.

Please refrain from posting images larger than 800x600 unless posted as a link. This is considerate to members with slow internet speeds, and keeps the forum looking tidy.

Insulting and flaming or personal attacks against forum staff will be not tolerated.

Please be considerate in language you use on the forum, some of our members are younger than others. Swearing is not completely banned, just do not swear unnecessarily, and only use minor words. A filter is in place to safeguard this system.

No hacking, and illegal activity, such as torrents and illegal downloads, cracks, wares, mp3s, game keys, etc will not be tolerated, and if appropriate, may be reported to local authority.

Please do not post inappropriate material, I think everyone understands what I mean by this. The policy goes that if you would not feel comfortable viewing it at work, or in front of children or parents, don't post it !

I think these rules are clear, and easy to follow. These are only in place to ensure our community is a fun place to be, and a comfortable atmosphere for all.

What happens if I break a rule ?
Depending on the severity of the infraction, a different course of action may be taken, but the usual practice is as follows :

1st rule break (Minor offence):
Corrected, A PM may of been sent, no further action taken For a more serious offence, a warning will be issued, this is a mark against your name letting us know you have broken a rule

3rd rule break

I think that the two Gearcity Suggestion forums should be merged.

I think i understand the current logic behind keeping them separate. i.e. the beta suggestion forum for beta suggestions, suggestions is for general game suggestions.
The problem is that the entire game is beta at the moment, so basically all suggestions are beta suggestions.
Practically, judging by the threads in both forums, they are serving the same purpose.
So why not just have one?

Beyond an argument of purpose, i would argue having two suggestions forums actually makes it more difficult for players and devs.
- Having two different forums is much more time consuming. It makes it more difficult to monitor and give feedback on suggestions. Its also much easier to miss suggestions and slightly more complex to search suggestions.
- The two different forums also contribute to people falling into the trap of posting already suggested ideas, as they don't notice or don't search both suggestion forums.

My view is that you should merge the two Gearcity suggestion forums
I would say remove the one under Gearcity. Leave the beta suggestions forum where it is, as i would argue that title is the most relevant/accurate.
Once the game is released, you can move and rename the Beta Suggestions forum to where the existing suggestions forum is located (just under Gearcity).
