DEMO Era
#2
Mostly because it's the start of the game. And it's also roughly the order in which we got artwork. One has to remember the Demo/Open beta has been around for roughly 3 years now.

The reason why I maintain it on this time period is because:
1) The artwork and files are already out there.
2) Adding in a time period such as 1950-1970 would mean I'd have to include all artwork from 1900-1970. Making the file much bigger and exposing more of the game to potential easy pricey (Granted eventually the full Steam build will be cracked, but so far we've been able to fly under the radar!!!) But you wouldn't even have to "crack" the game if I included the 1900-1970 artwork. You would just need to edit a few text files and the db to get 70 years of gameplay.
3) It's the most heavily tested version of the game since it's been around for so long. Other parts of the game still have balancing issues.
4) It offers a taste of everything, war, depressions, etc. Without the harder to get through great depression and ww2 1930-1960 would give you.
5) It's been traditionally that way.

The problem is with picking a year is how city sizes are calculated, we used a fixed file for the starting years. Thus you can't even do it in the paid for version of the game! It's on my todo list, but it'll be a while. Still such an idea for the demo would get trouble with 2,3, and 5. Smile
